“Mel” Hummel Romero
I have been tutoring Spanish with students of all ages, including adults, since 2017—providing support with schoolwork as well as creating individualized lessons on varying topics of grammar and culture. I am bilingual in Spanish and English, Spanish being my second language—I studied it in school from middle school all the way through college. I went on to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from Wittenberg University in 2015. I lived in Mexico City for a year after college; while there, I lived with a host family, volunteered at three work sites in the city, and met my husband. From that experience, I know first-hand the life-changing power learning another language can provide!
Most recently, I worked at a high school in Aurora for three years as an advocate and advisor. I became certified in trauma-informed approaches as well as in mindful and equity based educational practices and leadership. I carry these tools with me in every environment.
I have held multiple bilingual work positions, which have added breadth to my varied Spanish vocabulary and cultural knowledge.
- Bilingual Immigration Paralegal (2017-2018)
- Bilingual Students Services Coordinator for an ESL school (2018)
- Bilingual Family/Student Advocate and Advisor (2018-2021)
I always strive to meet my students where they are at in their learning and structure unique learning experiences around what interests them to promote more effective sessions. I teach Spanish in a way that is supportive, fun, and alleviates the frustrations that often come with learning another language. My ultimate goal for my time with my students is to spark joy in learning Spanish in hopes that it will aid them in future opportunities to communicate, work, travel, and build relationships with a whole new community in the world!
I offer tutoring services for individuals, small groups, or large groups (conversational practice sessions also an option) and am also open to leading special lessons and event workshops for specific learning purposes, i.e. holiday workshops with vocabulary and cultural information/activities, or intensive workshops for medical, education, legal, or business specific communications and vocabulary.
I am also happy to offer sessions on study/organizational/note-taking skills as well as Psychology schoolwork support, including AP Psychology.
I look forward to working with you and your family!
